Olaf Strömdahl, barrelmaker? Örebro (reply)

Hello Ovind,

It seemed very unlikely to me also, therefore my question. The mark looks identical to the mark in Der Neue Stöckel. In the book Haanskydevaabens Bedömmelse of J.F. Stöckel comes the mark with a year. That is in the same period as the marks on the lock. The barrel seems to be the original one, as far as I can judge that. I will try to make a picture of the mark, it is very small. When I have a picture, how can I post it?

Greetings,

Olaf Strömdahl, barrelmaker? Örebro (reply)

Do you have a picture of the marking? It sounds a bit unlikely to me that the Swedish supplied musket barrels to their old enemies Denmark. It could have been taken from a captured musket, but Sweden and Denmark did not fight any wars between 1720 and 1788. If indeed it is Swedish the barrel could also have been purchased through foreign agents and not directly from Sweden.

Olaf Strömdahl, barrelmaker? Örebro

Hello,

Can anyone give me information about Olaf Strömdahl(Strömdal) 1759-1810 who was probably a barrelmaker at the Gevärsfaktori in Örebro.
I found his mark(Der Neue Stöckel, p1232, mark8301) on the barrel of my Danish/Norwegian M1774/41/51 infantry-rifle. The rifle was origanally build as a flitlock musket in about 1780 at the Kronborg Gevaersfabrik in Denmark.
Does anyone know if the Örebro Gevärsfaktori produced barrels for the Kronborg Gevaersfabrik?

Greetings,

Shooting the .32 rimfire Smith & Wesson

Some time ago I got an Smith & Wesson Model 1 1/2 Second Issue as a gift. It's made in 1869 or 1870 and in good shooting condition. As I only have five original .32 rimfire long cartridges I purchased new brass from H & C Collection in France (Dixie has brass too). The cases utilize .22 starting pistol blanks as primers and the flash hole is bored off center and thus allows the hammer to hit the rim. The heel base bullets are also from H & C and were cast from an old Hensley & Gibbs mould.

Here's a video I put together during the first test of the revolver:

The cartridges was loaded with 8 grains of Swiss No. 2 which is maximum. The .22 blank adds quite a bit of power, so it's probably a good idea to use .22 CB (6mm Flobert) as primers instead.

New black powder book soon available!

I've just sent off the manuscript for a new book entitled From Musket to Metallic Cartridge: A Practical History of Black Powder Firearms to the publisher. It will be published in late 2013, probably in November – both as hardback and ebook.

The book covers practically all types of black powder shooting and the history and historical use of the firearms, from matchlock muskets to breech-loading rifles and cartridge revolvers. If you're interested you can submit your email address on this page and I'll notify you when it's available. Perhaps you'll get a good offer too!

Illustrated with hundreds of high-quality photographs and drawings, you can read about the most common Scandinavian firearms, such as the kammerlader, 12mm Remington rolling block, Jarmann, Krag-Petersson and 7.5mm Nagant, as well as the Prussian Dreyse, French Chassepot, German Mauser 71 and 71/84, Sharps percussion and cartridge rifles, rifle and smooth-bore muskets, shotguns, pistols, percussion revolvers, shotguns. In addition the book has chapters on loading black powder cartridges (including pinfire and rimfire cartridges), hunting, how to sight in and make the most of your black powder firearm, paper patching and bullet casting. The list goes on and on ...

Here's a picture I took before the text and images were sent to England. Hope you'll enjoy it :)

Dont use a 50-70 die set, but a 50 alaskan die set (from Hornady). The nominal kaliber over the grooves are .502 (my Husqvarna are .507) the kaliber over the lands are .479, so it goes fine to use .501 revolver bullets, lead or jaketed.

For your information, this thread is five years old.

Most Norwegian use .50-70 Gvt. dies, and it work just fine. And it is not recommended to use metal jacketed bullets with black powder due to excessive bore wear.
